Former state lawmakers Jeff Smith and Steve Brown were sentenced today for lying to federal officials in an effort to cover-up their involvement in an anonymous political attack. Jeff Smith got one year in prison and Steve Brown received one year's probation.

Missouri state Sen. Jeff Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony charges related to his 2004 campaign for the U.S. Congress, according to testimony in U.S. District Court in St. Louis.
Smith, 37, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice. The first count is for obstructing a Federal Elections Commission investigation in the aftermath of the 2004 Congressional election, and the other is for obstructing a federal grand jury investigation this year. Smith, D-St. Louis, also resigned his seat today.
