Norma Kaplan and her friends have been gathering for years to make strudel before life-cycle occasion -- bar mitzvahs, weddings, etc. This time, about nine family and friends made more than 600 pieces of strudel for her grandson's bar mitzvah. The strudel is filled with a mixture of jellies, dried apricots, nuts and cherries.

Hermann Farm opens with Civil War Days September 24-25

A 19th Century farm in Hermann, Mo., being restored as a "living history" museum opens Sept. 24-25 with events commemorating a minor but comical skirmish during the Civil War. The farm is the latest project in Hermann of banker James Dierberg. The 175-acre farm has restored the original buildings which includes barns, a smoke house, a wine press and the two-story brick farmhouse, which was built around 1850.
