Huge crowd gathered in front of the White Star Line office in New York's lower Broadway to get the latest news on the sinking of the liner Titanic on April 14, 1912. The ship, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, went down after striking an iceberg off Newfoundland. It was one of the sea's greatest disasters: 1513 were lost of whom 103 were women and 53 were children.
