Caption: As published April 8, 1962, in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's PICTURES magazine, "In his studio before his death last September, Saarinen studies models of catenary arches. In the catenary, structurally the soundest of all arches, the thrust passes down throught the legs and is absorbed in thefoundtations; in other arches, pressure tends to forcde the legs apart. Saarinen, originally a sculptor, had a great feeling for dramatic form. Photo by Reynold Ferguson of the PICTURES Staff
