Whitecotton resigned on Nov. 23, 1954, and returned to his position as a Highway Patrol captain, from which he had been on leave. Eidson, a former Camden County sheriff, resigned in December 1955. Blair was elected governor in 1956, replacing fellow Democrat Donnelly. (Post-Dispatch)
