Vice President and Jane Barkley on the set of KSD-TV in downtown St. Louis on Nov. 3, 1952, two days before the national election that chose Gen. Dwight Eisenhower to replace Truman, who declined to run again. Kentucky voters returned Barkley to the U.S. Senate in 1955. He served there until his death on April 30, 1956, in Lexington, Va., at age 78. During a speech at Washington and Lee University, he suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after uttering, "I would rather be a servant in the house of the Lord, than to sit in the seats of the mighty."  In 1962, Jane Barkley became appointments secretary to the president of George Washington University in Washington. In St. Louis, she had done similar work at Washington University after her first husband died in 1945. Jane Barkley died on Sept. 4, 1964, in her apartment on Connecticut Avenue in Washington. She was 52. bituary articles did not list a cause of death. After a funeral service there, her ashes were interred at Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis next to those of her first husband. Among her survivors were her mother, who had lived with her in Washington; and her daughters, Jane Perry of Washington and Anne Behrend of Omaha. (Post-Dispatch)
