Caption: The abandoned mansion of James B. Eads at 1607 Compton Avenue in 1928, shortly before it was demolished. It was built for James Thomas, who was St. Louis mayor from 1864 to 1869. Eads bought it and renamed it Compton Hill. He moved to New York a few years before he died while vacationing in the Bahamas in 1887. The mansion later was home to an Episcopal girls' school. The site is now Terry Park, two blocks east of the St. Louis University School of Medicine. On the north side of the small park is Eads Avenue. (Post-Dispatch)
