Debris piles up in a hallway of the old Merchants Exchange during demolition in December 1957. The building was intended as a civic showcase when it was built in 1875. Woodwork was in carved walnut, door fittings were of brass, marble covered tables and other surfaces. During the demolition, much of that was sold to salvagers and ended up in homes, restaurants and other businesses, here and throughout the country. (Arthur Witman/Post-Dispatch)
