Caption: Circus Flora clown conductor Claire Wedemeyer visits with George Gutierrez, 3, at Mercy Children's Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, in Creve Coeur. Wedemeyer, part of Circus Flora Clowns on Call, makes weekly visits to children at Mercy Children's Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. Wedemeyer, who moved back to her hometown of St. Louis from Chicago to take the job, said the work is a different kind of reward than performing on stage. "In this setting, you have no choice but to make a connection." Averaging almost two dozen visits with children a week, Wedemeyer walks the floor with a wagon full of props, stopping to visit with patients. "In clowning, there's a huge spectrum. In the hospital, I often go to the edge of the spectrum where my efforts are to create a performance as simple as possible." Tuesday was the first official day Circus Flora Clowns on Call made rounds at the hospital.
