Rolla Wells was governor of the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis when he gave a speech on April 24, 1918, applauding efforts to purge the German language from American public discourse during World War I. Wells had been mayor of St. Louis during the 1904 World's Fair. His father, Erastus Wells, a streetcar magnate and namesake of the suburb of Wellston. (Post-Dispatch)
