In May, the county assessed the value of the new River City Casino in Lemay at $284 million. Since then, the county's Board of Equalization has cut hundreds of millions of dollars off the assessed value, a move that will cost school, fire, and other districts millions of dollars in tax revenue.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2011 - Karriem Muhammad (left) of Karriem's Konstruction gets help from William Porter (on ladder) as barber Calvin Pettyjohn (center) looks on during the installation of a new sign above Sweet Shears barber shop on Cherokee Street Tuesday morning in St. Louis. When it's mathematically correct, it always looks off to the human eye, said Muhammad of his wood cutting technique, but if you make it slightly off, it looks perfect to the eye. AUGUST 4 2011- I should have invited Sharon. She always wants to clean up, jokes Norma Kaplan of Creve Couer, who draws a laugh from Debbie Sher of Chesterfield, while carefully cutting the strudel into pieces on her kitchen table. Kaplan spent the morning with family and friends, some life long friends from University City High, making strudel for her grandson's bar mitzvah. The girls have gathered over the years before life-cycle occasions -- such as bar mitzvahs, weddings-- to make strudel. Laurie Skrivan | lskrivan@post-dispatch.com
