Andrew Bruns (left) and Leonard Bacon, owner of Monumental Finishers, touch up a replica of a Civil War gunboat cannon Thursday in South St. Louis Square, a small park at 7700 South Broadway in Carondelet. The South Broadway Merchants Association bought the cannon from a museum in Georgia at the urging of Noel Stasiak, an area antiques dealer and Civil War re-enactor. The replica, made of cement, is to be dedicated at 11 a.m. Saturday. The park is a few blocks from the former site of James B. Eads' boatyard, which was building the Union's first iron-armored river gunboats 150 years ago.
