Gus O. Nations, chief Prohibition agent in St. Louis. Nations, a teetotaler, had lobbied for the 18th Amendment and the federal and state laws banning alcoholic beverages. He was energetic in enforcing the laws in St. Louis, where many residents still wanted their liquor. At 1:30 a.m. Jan. 1, 1923, he led five officers on a raid of a New Year's Eve party at the new Chase Hotel, Lindell Boulevard and Kingshighway. The well-connected and well-dressed patrons reacted angrily. During the mayhem, an assisting officer who was knocked onto the floor fired one shot from his revolver, slightly wounding three people. Nations remained chief dry agent for St. Louis until 1928, when he resigned and became attorney for the Missouri Anti-Saloon League. He died in 1942 at age 49. (Post-Dispatch)

Henry S. Priest, prominent railroad lawyer and former federal judge who attended the party at the Chase Hotel that ended in a gunshot and riot. Priest sued Nations on behalf of one of the wounded people. He also was active wet and leader of the Missouri Association Against the Prohibition Amendment. He called a public meeting against Nations and the raid, and 2,000 people took part at the Odeon Theater, North Grand Boulevard and Finney Avenue. Priest made unsuccessful runs for governor and mayor, but worked against Prohibition until his death at age 77 in 1930, three years before repeal. (Post-Dispatch)

Chase Ulman, builder, owner and namesake of the Chase Hotel. The hotel, at Lindell Boulevard and Kingshighway, opened on Sept. 29, 1922, and quickly was a favorite spot for the city's fashionable and prosperous. Its inaugural New Year's Eve party was the big event that night in St. Louis. Ulman, who was a lawyer, strongly protested Nations' raid and said the dry agent's warrant was invalid. Nations confirmed later that he obtained the warrant because he had seen liquor on tables at the Veiled Prophet Ball in the Chase several weeks before. Ulman and Priest cried foul, saying Nations' raid violated the Fourth Amendment protection against improper searches. (Post-Dispatch)

Mark Wallace helps his daughter Lauren, 9, as she steers their Power Kite at CBC Cadet Park in Town and Country. Lauren and her sister Kaitlyn, 12, got the kite as a Christmas gift after seeing You Tube videos of people jumping and skating using the kite. Friday was the first day they tried out the kite. We haven't gotten off the ground yet but it's really lots of fun. When you get blown off your feet it feels kind of like you're flying, Lauren said.

Left, Sayel Salman, owner of Sal's Beauty Supply and More on N. Newstead Avenue, said a silver pickup truck with three men in it backed into his business and attempted to steal the ATM around 3:50 a.m. Friday Dec. 30, 2011. They couldn't get the ATM but they did steal a lap top computer and caused structural damage to the building which will have to be repaired before he can reopen the store. I've been here three years and could never imagine anything like this happening. I'm good to everyone in the neighborhood, he said. Also pictured is Roscoe Carter, employee at Sal's.

We are barely getting by. We didn't qualify for the aid. We need some help, said Helence McDaniel who is restoring the interior of their home with her husband along the 4500 block of Lewis Place which was damaged from the New Year's Eve 2010 tornado Friday, December 30, 2011, in St. Louis, Mo.
