Kim Kloeppel, ranch assistant, tries to coax a mare into Safe Stay Stables at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch Friday night. Early this week, the Vernon County Sheriff's Department and The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force received calls about dead and starving horses on a property near Milo, Mo. Sixteen underweight horses and 2 donkeys were rescued. Seven deceased horses were also found. The rescued horses and donkeys were taken to the Humane Society of Missouri's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Mo. Friday Jan. 6, 2012.

22 DEC. 2011 -- ST. LOUIS -- Family and friends of Anthony Lamar Smith gathered to light candles and offer prayers Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 remembering Smith in the Church's Fried Chicken parking lot in the Walnut Park neighborhood of St. Louis where Smith became involved in an altercation with police that led to a chase and to Smith being shot by an officer. Smith later was pronounced dead at an area hospital after the Wednesday chase.
