Thomas Stearns Eliot, poet, born in St. Louis in 1888, back in town on Jan. 16, 1933, to speak on William Shakespeare at Washington University. It was the first visit by Eliot, 44, since he left for Europe in 1914. He was living and writing in London. Post-Dispatch)

T.S. Eliot, seated at left center, on June 11, 1953, on his second visit to St. Louis since he earned his fame as a poet, critic and playwright. The gathering was in the home of Washington University chancellor Arthur Holly Compton. With Eliot are relatives from across the United States and Great Britain who gathered here for his second speech at the university, which was celebrating its centennial in 1953. The Rev. William Greenleaf Eliot of St. Louis, a founder of Washington University, was his grandfather. (Post-Dispatch)

It's a shame there's not too many places like this anymore said Patrick who was lamenting the store's closing.

A bald eagle warms its feathers Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2012, in a tree next to the Great River Road at Grafton, Il., oblivious to the many passersby who stopped to marvel at the beautiful bird and take pictures. Warming its feathers causes the eagle to produce an oil that helps protect them.
