The Rev. Owen Whitfield, an evicted sharecropper and a leader of the protest, became vice president of the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union. He, his wife and their 11 children had worked on a farm in Missouri's Bootheel. During the protests along the highways, Whitfield traveled to St. Louis and spoke on Jan. 22, 1939, at the Amalgamated Clothing Workers hall, 1722 Washington Avenue. About 600 people attended the meeting and contributed $100 for the sharecroppers by passing hats. (Post-Dispatch).

A video message urging former Walgreens pharmacy customers to make the switch to Dierbergs pharmacy plays near the Dierbergs dairy section of the Lemay Plaza location in south St. Louis County Wednesday Dec. 14, 2011. Express Scripts, one of leaders in pharmacological management industry, announced that Walgreens drug store will no longer be a participating provider in their network effective next month. Dierbergs stands to gain more customers from the fallout. We went from filling about 100 prescriptions a day to I can't tell you how many Walgreens transfers we do every day now, said pharmacy technician Sarah Rutherford, not pictured.

Cedric Wright will file charges for wrongful imprisonment against the city after he was arrested on charges against a different man. Despite a judge's order to release him, he spent 2 months in the city jail until the mistake was discovered.

St. Louis firefighter Adam Thornberry extinguishes a fire on a school bus Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at the intersection of Mullanphy Street and Helen Street in north St. Louis. Twelve elementary school students were on board but escaped without any problems, said St. Louis Fire Capt. Dan Sutter. They were heading to Dewey Elementary and Wilkinson Early Childhood schools.The engine was completely destroyed by fire and the interior was covered with soot, along with melted and burned seats.

An accident on southbound 170, south of the Delmar overpass, blocked a lane of traffic on Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. Many accidents were reported due to the icy road conditions. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for St. Louis beginning at 3 p.m. The advisory warned that a light freezing rain or drizzle may cause hazardous road conditions.
