John Adam Lemp, a German immigrant who introduced lager beer to St. Louis in 1838 from his brewery at 112 South Second Street. His company became St. Louis' largest brewery, eclipsed later by Anheuser-Busch Co. Two more generations of the Lemp family ran the brewery, but it closed with Prohibition in 1920. Four of his descendants committed suicide, three of them in the family mansion. John Adam Lemp, known as Adam, died in 1862. (Post-Dispatch)

William J. Lemp Sr., son of John Adam Lemp, who took over the brewery after his father's death and moved it to Carondelet (now Broadway) and Cherokee Street south of downtown. Lemp Sr. ran the brewery until 1904, when he shot himself in the temple inside his mansion at 3322 South 13th Street (now DeMenil Place). Friends said he had been depressed since the death in 1901 of one of his sons, Frederick Lemp, who was brewery superintendent. (Post-Dispatch)
