Teachers took part in the annual pancake race Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2012, at St. Mary's School in Edwardsville. Kindergarten teacher Laura Guetterman, physical education teacher Jackie Weiersmueller, and music teacher Marsha Etzkorn raced in the finals to see who won the golden spatula. Weiersmueller won in the final stretch. The pancake race is a tradition that goes back several hundred years in France and is always performed on the day before Ash Wednesday. Following the races, the students watched the burning of palm leaves in preparation for Ash Wednesday.

The trail is slanted and beneath a layer of leaves at Teszars Woods Conservation Area. It's narrow with erosion ruts and the length of the trail is downhill or up. Use a hiking stick because the leaves can cover holes and mud. The ground is soft enough as not to crack ankles, but soft spots can cause spills.
