Scott Carey takes notes on the two espressos he made for Jason Sinn at South City Sump Coffee in St. Louis on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012. He used a longer extraction on the second espresso which gave the drink a slightly different smell and taste. I have a lot of timers. I take a lot of notes. I get a little geeky about it, Carey said.

Technicians with the L-3 Essco Co. from Ayer, Mass., calibrate the new duo-pol radar system Thursday afternoon, Feb. 23, 2012, at the National Weather Service in Weldon Springs. John Spinale, on the scaffolding, hands a wire to Brian Hallgren, while Nigel Ellis works the computer at right. They were inside the giant ball that houses the radar dish. The new duo-pol radar will look at clouds and precipitation both horizontally and vertically. This will give weather forecasters a better estimate of the size and amount of droplets, snow, hail and drizzle in the approaching clouds.
