The Greats: Cardinals players so accomplished that no player after them could ever wear the same number. Ozzie Smith, The Wizard of Oz, born Dec. 26, 1954, wore jersey number 1. Ozzie Smith combined athletic ability with acrobatic skill to become one of the game's great defensive shortstops. In 19 seasons with the Padres and Cardinals, the 13-time Gold Glove Award winner set Major League shortstop records for assists, double plays and total chances. He had over 2,400 hits and 500 stolen bases. His ninth-inning home run won Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series.

June 21, 1982 - No one color ranks as Ozzie Smith's wardrobe favorite. I mix it up pretty well. I think I have the type of complexion any color I choose would blend with. Burgundy looks well with my skin, but so do black and white. The positive-negative contrast is what he picks for this look. It's slightly more casual than many of his ensembles - no tie.photo by Robert LaRouche | Post-Dispatch
