Although The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis was completed in 1914, it was not consecrated until June 29, 1926. Also known as the “New Cathedral”, the building was designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II on April 4, 1997. Pope John Paul prayed and delivered a speech at the Cathedral during his St. Louis visit in January of 1999.
June 29,1926, was a red-letter day for Catholics in St. Louis. Six cardinals, headed by Cardinal John Bonzano, papal delegate to the United States, came here to consecrate the new St. Louis Cathedral. They are among many church leaders from around the world shown here, leaving the church after the ceremony. Post-Dispatch staff photo
